Conservation Techniques
Fixing of fugitive inks and soluble pigments prior to washing and cleaning.
Guarding or fasciculing of letters, pamphlets, manuscripts, plates, maps, plans and documents. Either of these methods secures loose pages or documents allowing binding into book form.
Hand sewing using carefully woven or flattened hemp cords or flexible sewing to form raised spine band binding.
Lamination and mounting. This service is for the treatment of seriously brittle or weak papers. Items are laminated or mounted onto suitable backing sheets to strengthen and support.
Leaf casting. This is a method of repairing paper using matching pulp infills. This is particularly useful for repairing extensively damaged pages where large areas are damaged or missing.
Microfilming on archival film or fiche. An approved form of surrogacy which allows the original to be handled less. A negative or positive copy of material can be produced after treatment and prior to rebinding.
