Our Scottish Centenary

2009 is the centenary year of our binding operations in Scotland.

Our Falkirk bindery is also home to our Conservation Studio that has now been established for over 30 years. The Falkirk bindery first started out in July 1909 as a partnership between Hugh Dunn and William Wilson.

We are proud that RDW has always been known as a family firm and

one that has served the people of the Falkirk district for the last 100 years by providing employment opportunities in the area often for generations of families.

We asked John Penman, our Director of Conservation and General Manager in Falkirk and longest serving employee, to recall his time with ‘Dunn & Wilson’ and assess where we have come.

John joined Dunn & Wilson as an apprentice bookbinder at the age of 15 in 1961 and was quite literally part of the Riley Dunn & Wilson family, working alongside his two sisters, a brother-in-law, and his aunt. He also went on, like many others, to meet and marry his wife, Janet whilst in the firm’s employment.

Looking back, he said: “100 years trading is a tremendous achievement, especially within the current climate, I have enjoyed the changes, some better than others but what drives me and others within the Company are the challenges. Our industry is going through another major change with e-journals having a bigger impact each year so it’s vital that we as a business diversify into new products and markets.”

“We have to prepare the Company and our staff to cope with new concepts, whilst laying strong foundations for the next generation to carry on.” Next page
