Online Resources
Improving access to information is a priority for librarians, archivists, curators and custodians. Digital technology is making the sharing of that information easier and faster, but how to protect it from unlawful copying and distribution is a major concern for many.
By scanning documents, online learning resources can be created where:
- Hand-written and fragile documents can be electronically reproduced, protecting the originals and allowing more people to access them.
- Documents can be made fully searchable with optical character recognition (OCR).
- Once access has been granted the information cannot be copied, altered or printed.
- The information expires, not the password. Downloaded information is deleted once the ‘lending’ time has run out.
- Different levels of access can be charged at different rates.
- Essentially you have an infinite number of copies for lending.
- As the information expires, your customers won’t have the hassle of returning the item and you won’t need to send out reminders or chase late returns.
- The size of the text can be increased without losing print quality. (Ideal for increasing access for the visually impaired.)
