John Penman RMSA, ACR
General Manager/Director of Conservation
John has been with Riley Dunn & Wilson Ltd. for over 47 years, starting as an apprentice bookbinder in 1961. He attended Glasgow College of Printing and Bookbinding winning The Hope Collins Prize, The Skinners Prize and the Course Medal as top student during his studies.
John joined the Society of Archivists in 1988 and became an Accredited Conservator-Restorer in 2000 through the PACR (Professional Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers) scheme and is a full member of ICON (Institute of Conservation).
He was a member of the panel responsible for reviewing and changing the British Standard 4971: Repair and Allied Procedures for the Conservation of Documents.
John acted as a consultant for the Department of Energy in the aftermath of the Ocean Odyssey Oil Rig disaster salvaging information for use in the ensuing court case.
He has also been employed as a consultant by the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal in Lisbon to set up an in-house bindery and train staff in working machines and procedures for library binding.
John masterminded and gained ISO Quality Standard Accreditation for Riley Dunn & Wilson Ltd. in 1994.
John has extensive knowledge and expertise in dealing with library, museum, archive and record office disasters whether resulting from direct effects of fire, heat, smoke or flood and heads a Company disaster team who are on stand-by and able to attend such incidents at short notice, 365 days a year.
