Conservation Techniques

Neutralisation of papers, either aqueously or non-aqueously, monitoring pH levels throughout. This process also neutralises stains and fox marks and other impurities in inks or on paper.

Patching and repairs to damaged documentation or pages. Traditional hand repairs of paper using Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste. On newer materials archival heat set tissue can be used. Parchments and vellums can be repaired using appropriate materials.

Relaxing of parchment and vellum. Support of brittle and degrading papers using tissue or papers.

Surface cleaning or washing to remove dust, dirt, some discolouration, staining and acids. It is particularly useful for cleaning prints, drawings and other paper documents.

Surrogate copies, providing copies of original images by scanning and digitising, copying or filming.

Treatment of papers suffering from physical or biological attack by insects, pests, fungus or mould.
