Packing

When packing books away for a lengthy period or wrapping up damaged bindings, consider what you are planning to pack them in carefully. Plastics and poor quality card should be avoided at all costs. Plastics can emit harmful gases and cheap card often has a high acid content which can damage books and paper over a period of time.

Books of value should be stored in acid-free preservation boxes. Contact our conservation team or learn more about our preservation boxes.

Ideally books should be packed in sturdy boxes and, if possible, kept off the floor to prevent damage in the event of a flood.

Be careful not to over-pack boxes or stack them so that one box can crush or cause damage to another.

Boxes should be reopened at least once a year to check for signs of damage and deterioration.
