Handling

What to look for

  • Large, heavy books with weak joints that can split easily
  • Old books that have become brittle or fragile
  • Dirt and dust on the covers or edges

What can be done

Always handle books with care and be aware of their limitations.

Do not force a book further than it will open naturally. Some books will not be able to open fully.

Take care not to transfer dirt or dust from the covers onto the paper surfaces within the book

Brittle paper can tear easily, so be careful when opening and turning pages.

Take care when removing books from and replacing them on shelves as being forceful or careless can lead to the spines being damaged. Do not remove books by pulling the headbands as these can become loose and eventually break away from the binding.

Be aware that the natural oils on your hands can assist in keeping leather covers more flexible and supple but adversely it can cause staining on the paper surface. Wearing gloves can reduce your sensitivity to fragile or delicate paper, but these should be used when handling such materials to minimise contact with the paper surface.
